The 2021 Subaru Forester: Introducing one of the safest compact SUV models on the market, the Subaru Forester.
The fifth generation Subaru Forester, which began with the 2019 model year, is one of the best compact SUV models on the market. In fact, U.S. News and World Report selected the 2019 Subaru Forester as the best compact SUV for families. Additionally, the 2019 model was selected as a 2019 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or IIHS. The sales figures for this model have eclipsed 150,000 units sold in the United States every year since 2013. While these figures aren’t the best in the compact SUV market, the company doesn’t skimp on quality with their Forester model.
What can we expect from the 2021 Subaru Forester
As previously mentioned, the 2019 Subaru Forester was introduced as an all-new, fully redesigned model, marking the start of the fifth generation Forester. With that being said, it should come as no surprise that the 2020 Forester model, which was recently introduced, had only minimal changes. Subaru is likely to observe the criticism that comes from the 2019 and 2020 models and make changes for the 2021 model year accordingly. While it’s hard to call any vehicle model perfect, the Subaru Forester is pretty close as it’s one of the most well-rounded models on the market. The modest engine of the current Subaru Forester is likely going to be the biggest complaint for this model. However, it’s unlikely that Subaru will make any dramatic changes to the powertrain so quickly following a complete redesign.
What users tell us about the Subaru Forester
Overall, the Subaru Forester gets great reviews across most relevant aspects of driving. The model is one of the safest on the market and the fuel-efficiency is amongst the best in its class. However, the engine is viewed by some as disappointing and the model has a weak maximum towing capacity of 1500 pounds. this is poor for any SUV model. Nonetheless, the all-wheel drive powertrain (standard on all trims), tremendous safety scores, and great cargo space make the Subaru Forester the perfect family SUV.
Subaru Forester Facts
The current Forester model was selected as a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS for its tremendous crash test scores. Additionally, every Forester model comes standard with a rearview camera and Subaru’s Eyesight Driver-Assist Package. The package includes pedestrian detection safety feature, a pre-collision braking system, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more. We hope to see some progression in Subaru’s driver assist technology.
The Subaru Forester currently averages about 26 city and 33 highway miles per gallon. These figures are similar to the best compact SUV models on the market such as the Nissan Rogue and Chevy Equinox. However, the Forester’s figures are more impressive than these models. This is because the Forester comes standard with all-wheel drive. 4WD has a tendency to lower a model’s fuel-efficiency.
The interior of the Subaru Forester is simple, but it looks nice and features high-end materials throughout. The all-new design of the Forester brought an increase in length to the exterior. This allows for more passenger space on the interior. The Forester offers a cargo area that is sufficiënt for most day to day usage.
The exterior of the all-new Subaru Forester took on a more standard SUV look than the Foresters of the past. The new exterior allowed additional cargo space and passenger space on the interior.
The sole engine option for the current Subaru Forester is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that is capable of producing a maximum of 182 horsepower. The lack of acceleration is the biggest complaint for the all-new Forester. Thankfully, the lack of power is counteracted by some of the best EPA-estimated fuel-efficiency in its class. Overall, the drive in a Subaru Forester is not as sporty as many of its competitors. It is definitely smooth and agile enough for everyday use. We expect a Forester Sport and Forester Touring trim.
J.D. Power and Associates gave the 2019 Subaru Forester an above-average predicted reliability rating of 3.5 out of five. Typically, the Subaru Forester has been an extremely reliable model.
2021 Subaru Forester price and expected release date
The 2020 Forester was formally introduced in August of 2019, and the Japanese car is set to become available in dealerships later this year. With that being said, it’s reasonable to suspect that we will get a glimpse of the 2021 Forester before the fall of 2020. The base MSRP on the 2020 Subaru Forester is about $24,495. The company is not likely to trend too far away from this price for the 2021 model year, but we do not expect great deals.
