A seventh generation Lexus
The 2021 Lexus ES will be the 32nd ES model year. This Lexus sedan started its life in 1989 and its seventh generation with its 2019 model. There are rumors that Lexus will launch its eight generation in 2021 with the 2022 model year. The model we are previewing will be mid-cycle. Most common new generation startup issues should have been smoothed out of the production line.
Lexus is Toyota’s luxury division. The car makes share technology and platforms but Lexus is setting itself in the market as a Luxury brand. Massive sales figures are less important, yet the Lexus ES is one of the few sedans in the best selling cars list in the United States.
China is an up and coming market for the Japanese car manufacturers. This is why the new 2019 Lexus ES was premiered at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. A notable addition to the ES line is the new F-sport option. Lexus also heavily invested in new driving assistance and safety technologies. The Chinese market expects longer and more ‘bad-ass’ looking cars, this Chinese requirement has been implemented in this 7th generation ES.
It is the first time the ES will be sold globally: the 7th generation also debuted in Europe where it used to be missing from the Lexus lineup. Sales figures for sedans in the US have been dropping for a while. The ES seems to hold its popularity at 50K units sold per year.
Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 features
Lexus’ main goal was to prevent the 3 most common type of accidents: Frontal impact collisions, unintended lane departures and nighttime accidents. The system is a combination of six active safety features:
- The Pre-Collision system: detection of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in bad lighting conditions.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control: a cruise control system that reacts to the radar inputs.
- Lane Departure Assist: the Lexus will steer back when unintentionally leaving lanes.
- Intelligent High Beams: high beams automatically adapt their settings based on lighting conditions.
- Road Sign Assistance: reads traffic signs and displays them on the Heads up display or the Multi-information display. This way the driver does not miss any road sign.
- Lane Tracing Assistance: display line markings to help the vehicle stay centered in its lanes.
Road sign assist and lan trace assistance are the main upgrades from the Lexus Safety System 1.0. The features seem a lot more advanced than the 2021 Nissan Sentra features. But the Sentra has a better aerodynamic drag coefficient (0.26 vs. 0.29).

2021 Lexus ES current user reviews
Users on Kelly Blue Book only seem to rate the car at 3.2 our of 5. Vibrations, bad transmission and users seem to find the navigation system not user friendly. There are a lot of reported issues with the stereo audio system and Lexus is not willing to resolve. The touchpad controls of the navigation system are perceived as dangerous while driving.
We expect Lexus to iron these issues out with the release of the 2021 model year.
2021 Lexus ES Trim Levels
The Lexus 2021 will most probably be offered in the US with the 3 trim levels. We do not expect mayor changes. ES engines vary by trim level, there is a Hybrid option, a traditional 3.5L v6 302hp engine and a more powerful F-sport option. Rated Certified Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV II) the engines will not completely kill our planet. The hybrid engine has a Line-In-4 215hp 2.5L engine. At lower power it does have 44MPG fuel consumption figures, while the traditional engine only delivers 26MPG.
The F-sport option is too weak in our opinion, at 302hp we do not consider it as a real performance level car.
Apple carplay and android auto come by default and for the music lovers there is a Harman Kardon speaker option and an Amazon Alexa powered navigation system. A head Up Display is optional.
2021 Lexus Price & Release Date
We expect the 2021 model year to go in sale in the United States in the fall of 2020. The Lexus ES will probably start out at 39000USD. This is a great price-point for an entry level luxury sedan. We do hope Lexus fixes the broken audio system.
What do you expect of this luxury sedan? Is a broken sound-system worth the investment?
