Are You Ready To Sell Your Soul to KIA?
The 2021 Kia Soul is a crossover/hatchback/SUV. It was specifically designed in California with the US market in mind. KIA builds the Soul’s in South Korea. Since this is the third generation of the car and the first iteration of the Soul was presented in 2008 the Soul does not have much legacy to fall back on. The 2021 model will be a refresh of the all new 2020 Kia Soul. This third generation Souls is marked by the existence of an all electric KIA Soul, the Soul EV. In Europe the model will be limited to the Soul EV only.
2021 Kia Soul: A box On Wheels
We personally do not like about the 2021 Kia Soul is its overly boxy design. It does have an All Wheel drive option but we do not feel this is usable as an ATV. The Soul was launched in the second quarter of 2020. At release the third generation KIA Soul did sell more than the pervious generation in the first 2 months, but after July 2019 sales seem to have stalled. Increased figured only seemed to be driven by the novelty of the third generation. Kia has not been able to keep up with the expectations. The boxy look: it is a matter of personal taste if you like them squared or rounded.
2021 Kia Soul: Engine Options
The Soul is available with 3 types of motorization in the US: the all exectric Soul EV, a 2.0 L I4 and a 1.6 L turbo-four engine. And for those who want to take the car off terrain an extra rugged trim option is available. The 2021 Kia Soul EV brings a fairly generous 64KWh battery pack. The EV will have a range of 243 miles, and that is more than the Chevrolet Bolt or KIA’s own competitor the KIA Niro EV.
The normal engine boasts up to 147hp form the front wheels, and is available with manual or 6 speed automatic transmission. More than enough power for this driving brick.
The 2021 Kia Soul will only be a refresh of the 2020 model. As it will be the second year for the new generation we expect that KIA will have fixed any production issues with the car and KIA will hav adjusted any mayor issues the car might have. The new generation brought better milage when compared to the second generation.
2021 Kia Soul: Exterior & Interior
New Souls wheelbase has been extended by about 2 inch, giving more space in the interior. The boxed outsides also seem to help to make the cabin extra spacious. With a cargo space that has been extended with 25%, mainly by carving out more space Kia managed to provide enough space for a lot of luggage. There is plenty of space for this budget friendly SUV. The square spaces hatchback also brings a lot of headroom for the passengers. It might be ugly from the outside, it is spacious from the inside.
2021 Kia Soul: Tech & Safety
Ths Soul comes with a lot of options albeit that we find that the base model lack too many features. Optional safety features include: automatic emergency breaking, blind spot warning, cross traffic alerts and the usual suspects. As for the tech connectivity features Apple Car-play and Android are supported. These are features that are not even available on other more expensive or exclusive car brands. Good job KIA, keep up the South Korean tech innovations! A 10 inch screen is available for the EX and GT-Line Turbo models, but the 8 inch screen on other models is already a nice to have.
More on that tech side: KIA also has e very kitchy K-pop inspired light settings that comes with most models. Start the light config and be amazed with the interior light. As you can see in the video below the effects are great but at the edge of being tacky:
If you are into music an optional 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is an option we would recommend. Oh and the Soul is a 2019 IIHS Top Safety Pick.
We talked about Ugly, let’s talk about the Bad now. The KIA is missing an AWD option. With no All Wheel Drive available we find it a shame it can not fully compare to the 2021 Toyota C-HR that does sport AWD. And the looks: we can not get over it, it is so boxy and the car look like it wants to eat your soul any moment…
2021 Kia Soul: Price & Release Date
We expect the 2021 model to be released in the second quarter of 2020. The base price will start at around $17,430 . We do not expect much hyper around it since it is the second year of a new iteration. The car got its fair share of hype with the 2020 release in 2019. Are you ready to sell your Soul to Kia?
Our score: (3.5 / 5) – Only of you like the boxed look, the Kia Niro looks way better.
