2021 Kia Sorento

Introducing arguably the best three-row seating SUV in the United States: the 2021 Kia Sorento.

The Kia Sorento is a midsize SUV that is manufactured by Kia Motors. The model was first introduced as a compact – mid size SUV in 2002, and was changed to a midsize SUV with the introduction of the second generation Sorento in 2010. The Kia Sorento now sits in its third generation where its been since the 2016 model year. The model was refreshed in 2019 with a new design and additional driver assistant features. The Kia Sorento is most well-known for its affordability and its large number of standard and available features. This means that in the coming years, upgrades to the powertrain and a potential complete redesign could be on the way.

What we can expect from the 2021 Kia Sorento

The update that was given to the Kia Sorento for the 2019 model year was pretty drastic given that the company elected not to completely redesign the model for that year. While the exact details on the 2020 Kia Sorento have yet to be formally announced by Kia Motors, the changes are likely to be miniscule at best. That leaves the door open for potentially large changes in the 2021 model year. The Kia Sorento’s standard engine accelerates considerably slower than many of its competitors, so it’s reasonable to suspect that changes to the Sorento’s powertrain are coming. The Sorento SUV’s main competitor will most probably be the Hyundai Santa Fe compact SUV.

The 2021 Kia Sorento has allready been spotted at the 2021 Nürburgring, a spy shots and video can be found here:

What users tell us about the Kia Sorento

The current Kia Sorento model is smaller than many of its competitors, and is more affordable. While the standard engine lacks excitement, the available V6 engine gives a much needed boost to an otherwise lackluster drive. Additionally, the Kia Sorento seats up to seven passengers, but the third row seating is much more cramped than other midsize SUV models. Still, shoppers that are looking to save some money should consider the Kia Sorento, because the model is safe and reliable. The quality of this model is spectacular, given its low initial MSRP.

Kia Sorento Facts

In a crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2019 Kia Sorento got the highest score of ‘Good’ on every test that was given. Additionally, the IIHS named this model a 2019 Top Safety Pick. The great crash test results, and a long list of available safety technology make the Kia Sorento one of the safest models on the market, and that’s not likely to change in the coming years.

Fuel Economy:

The base engine on the current Kia Sorento model may lack the acceleration that other midsize SUVs display, but it averages roughly 22 city and 29 highway miles per gallon, which are some of the best averages in the Sorento’s class. The sportier V6 engine averages about 19 city and 26 highway miles per gallon, which is still better than many other midsize SUVs. We expect Kia to offer both hybrid and plug in hybrid models.

The upscale interior of the Sorento is one of the main elements that makes this model one of the best for its value. The interior is decorated with high-end materials and comfortably sits adults in the front and second row seats. However, the third row seats and cargo areas of the current Sorento model are considerably smaller than most of the model’s competitors. In the 2020 and 2021 model year, Kia Motors could potentially address these issues. The infotainment system is expected to offer Apple Carplay and Android Auto support.

The exterior of the third generation Sorento is built on the same platform as the 2015 Kia Carnival. In the 2019 model year, Kia Motors refreshed the Sorento giving it new wheel options and additional exterior colors. A complete redesign to the Kia Sorento isn’t out of the question for the 2021 Sorento. We hope the 2021 model will sport thinner headlights based on LED.

The standard 185 horsepower four-cylinder engine on the current Sorento model leaves much to be desired. Almost every reputable publication recommends that shoppers upgrade to the available V6 engine that can produce a maximum output of 290 horsepower. However, regardless of which engine is on this model, the Kia Sorento provides one of the smoothest rides in the model’s class. It’s unlikely that Kia Motors will make any dramatic changes to the powertrain for the 2020 model year. A change like that is more likely to come in 2021.

J.D. Power and Associates gave the 2019 Kia Sorento a predicted reliability rating of four out of five, which is one of the better ratings in the midsize SUV class.

2021 Kia Sorento price and expected release date

As the end of 2019 gets nearer, Kia Motors has yet to formally introduce the 2020 Kia Sorento. Therefore, it’s likely that reliable information about the 2021 Sorento won’t be made available until late in the year 2020. The Sorento will likely maintain its reputation as one of the most affordable models of its class in the coming years. Kia recently scored with its Kia Telluride, we think this smaller brother will have the same Fate and that Kia will dominate the US SUV market.

We are quite sure Kia will again offer high quality at an affordable price.

Should Kia Motors give their Sorento model a complete redesign for the 2021 model year? Let us know what you think.
