High expectations for the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee after a 9 year 4th generation run

Will the new generation Cherokees blow us away? The fourth generation Jeep Cherokee has been in production from 2011 to 2020. This is by far the largest cycle for a Cherokee generation. In 1993 the first generation Cherokees saw the light with Jeep pushing out more than 200.000 units per year. Jeep has been able to keep up that number over the years. What will the 5th generation 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee bring us? The 2011 model was marked with a new 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, air suspension and adaptive cruise control. Will the new Grand Cherokee bring a full electric option?

Previous generation recalls

The story and reviews of Jeep Grand Cherokees have been overly positive. We can only point to the high number of recalls. FCA must have handled them well because Cherokee drivers still are loyal to the brand, even the last 2019 model is selling well.

Recalls:

  • Fuel system integrity issues
    • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started an investigation on older models. It appeared that on impact fuel tanks would lose their integrity and causing fires. More than 150 deaths were caused by this issue. The issue affected more the 5 million vehicles. Trailer hitches protecting the fuel tank were installed on recalled Cherokees.
  • Transfer case actuator issues
    • A less big issues, and even went unnoticed by some users. Cars sometimes rolled away by moving into neutral on their own.
  • Transmission parking pawl issues
    • On some Cherokees when users put them in park the electric gear shifted back to drive, driving away. The transmission shift program was altered to prevent this behavior.
  • Alternator failures causing fires
  • Improperly installed handbrake shields

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee receives 4.5 Billion investment

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced a 4.5 Billion investment in the new Cherokee, the Wagoneer and all-electric SUV’s. We expect FCA to come out with Hybrid and full electric versions. Jeep is also expected to bring a 3 seat row SUV next to the Cherokee and Wagoneer line. The investment is mostly going to five FCA’s production plants in Michigan. Production of the new Grand Cherokee is expected to start early 2021. Dealerships will be accepting orders in the beginning of the year.

Focus on innovation: Hybrid and Electric?

Mike Manley, CEO, stated that the investments will mainly focus on Hybrid engine engineering and production. It is very imaginable that the new Jeep 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee will aim for the Tesla Model X and Model Y market share. At least 4 hybrid models are expected and they will break with the FCA eTorque powertrain. What else do we expect to be in scope for the redesign? The 2021 Jeep Wrangler does seem to have a future hybrid version.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Safety features

We also expect Jeep to further innovate and invest in safety features. Previous generation scored all points in the NHTSA safety test:

Overall NHTSA score:
Frontal Driver:5 stars
Frontal Passenger:5 stars
Side Driver:5 stars
Side Passenger:5 stars
Side Pole Driver:5 stars
Rollover:4 stars

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Redesign Expectations

After the 2014 Cherokee refresh with a then still revolutionary UConnect 8.4 inch touchscreen we expect Jeep to continue innovating with the interfaces. The last refresh marked updated interior and exterior styling. An eco-diesel and something called SelecTerrain system. SelecTerrain system brings you all-weather capability at the touch of a button: Automatic, Snow, Sport and Mud/Sand mode. The car and its refreshed versions scored great in safety tests. They won several car of the year awards and Cherokee buyers are most likely to repurchase the Cherokee again. Jeep even states the Cherokee has been the most awarded SUV ever. Never change a winning team… this is probably why the fourth cycle lasted almost a decade. The regular Cherokee might we dropped from the line as the Grand Cherokee is the more popular variant and Jeep is moving to lager SUV’s with the upcoming three row seater model.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee: a Luxury SUV

Like the competition we expect Jeep to invest in Luxury. We expect a wide range of premium trims to the Cherokee can compete with the ever popular luxury truck like the RAM line. It will probably steal some features from the RAM 1500 big brother.

We expect that the new Cherokee will be available for a starting price of $33000.
